View Full Version : Vista - why is indexing re-enabling?

My sister recently had Vista forced on her after buying a Dell laptop, and I've been trying to get it running as smoothly as possible. I disabled search indexing from the hard disk properties window and disabled the indexing service itself, and set it to manual start. However, when I restart windows the service has restarted all by itself. Am I missing something?
You know, the thing I hate the most about Vista is the lack of control. It should not be a big deal for a PC to do what I tell it, when I tell it.

manual start means some other process can start it.
disable it if you really want it off.
dont blame vista for your lack of understanding of how it works.

thats funny, since you dont seem to know the difference between manual start and disabled.
and set it to manual start
So which is it. Is the service disabled, or on manual start. it cant be both.

Instead of being a jerk, try reading what he said. Setting the SERVICE to manual is not the same as disabling the service.
Also, checking the box to stop indexing the drive has nothing to do with search, it has to do with the indexing service which is a completely different thing. In fact, I don't believe that indexing service is even installed as a default.
Set the windows search service to disabled

I'm afraid that's just the way I respond to obnoxious comments. I'm supposed to know every in and out of Vista just to disable something? And my "lack of understanding" doesn't negate the fact that people who don't have that encyclopedic knowledge of it are going to lack control over what it does.
I have set the service to "disabled" now. Thank you.

Wow....it's threads like these that make me want to leave.....I hate asking a question and getting rude ass remarks. If the OP knew what he was doing, he wouldn't be here asking.

Monkey God gave him the answer he was looking for. Could he have been more civil? Yes, could Scrumdiddly not have come back obnoxiously? Yes. All in all, the answer was given, and the OP did not understand the difference between manual and disabled. He does now.
Also, if you want to leave, then leave.

obnoxious? pot meet kettle? jesus dude, seriously, chill the fuck out.
I just hate seeing people slam a product they have no idea how to use.
next time try this:
1)
I have a question, how do I turn off vista indexing, it seems to always come back on
instead of this:
2) vista sucks zomg it always comes back on even though I turned it off WTF
see how that works?

Yeah, I apologise for that.
I'm hardly saying "Vista sucks" though, am I? I said I don't like the lack of control. Turning something off shouldn't require delving into services windows and knowing that "manual", in fact, does not mean manual, it means "slightly less automatic". I hate that it's so arcane.

You are not saying "Vista sucks"... however your post was full of shock tactics.
First, your sister was forced by Dell to use Vista? Incorrect, it came with the system... you can install any flavor of Linux on it and then you are forcing *her* to use Linux. So it is not forcing.
Saying you are trying to get it to run smoothly as possible by disabling services. That is also incorrect. You can research this if you have any further questions about it. You go on to say that it "restarted all by itself", which is also incorrect, as it was started by another process.
Then you end your post by saying that you hate the "lack of control", yet, there is no "lack of control" but a lack of understanding.
It is a simple misunderstanding, however, the way you positioned it made it seem like you were not asking but ranting without being informed. I do agree with you that not everyone is supposed to know the ins and outs of an OS in order to do a function, but that is why you ask the question, not position it in a way to misinform others about a particular OS.

Also since I believe Windows 2000, it has remained the same 3 options, auto, manual and disabled. Though Vista does have several places that you have to go in order to disable indexing all together, from the actual hard drive and in the control panel should be the only two places you need to go. I disabled indexing without needing to remove services, I can tell you the exact locations if you would like but once you start learning the ins and outs of Vista it does make things a lot easier.
Just remember that you are not forced into Vista, you can install any Linux you want or just go back to XP as well.
It's pretty amazing how bent over backwards towards MS/Vista some users are here and how arrogantly they respond to users who want to disable some of the useless bloat Vista includes by default.
Vista sucks on so many levels that none of any major corporations even consider migrating into it - and those who do should have their it admins fired.
BTW: If a user want's his machine with XP preinstalled and he/she can get only Vista then it's being FORCED on them. Clear enough?
