View Full Version : Server 2008
Just got the whole server 2008 pitch and MS exec back slapping that is a "hero's happen here" event today....
Does anyone else besides the people they had give testimonials actually have it in prod yet?
Some of the features they showed off made my mouth water....I'm tempted to switch all future installs to core installations just for the sake of idiot proofing them from prodding managers or bosses :p
Oh and they gave free copies of everything out so if you want to learn the stuff def register and show up...lots of free swag :) They dropped a copy of vista ultimate w/ SP1 integrated in too...doesn't say anything about 60/90/1 year demo *ANYWHERE* on the packaging or disc...just "not for resale" in bold everywhere...anyone know if this copy if installed will work and be legit?

wich event did you go to? i was at the one in Boston it was really good i was impressed lots of good information.
getting free vista is like a $200 deal :) and 365 day trial of server 2008 is perfect for learning.
i really want to play around with the Hyper-V in server 2008 but i don't have a cpu that will support it? i made another thread about it, do you know if you need a CPU with virtualization support?

We are currently deploying about a dozen for one of our development teams who are building an enterprise application that will take advantage of the WPAS capabilities.
We will probably slowly migrate a couple of hundred more servers over the next year, but not for critical base infrastructure like domain controllers and messaging servers until we've had more testing time in the lab.

i think the server 2008 license is valid for only one year, so if you want it in a production environment, you'll have to actually buy it. the free vista licenses were pretty sweet, i was able to snag 2 of those, and screw the NFR, i'm ebaying mine :)

I'm going to set up a terminal server very soon with server 2008. The idea of RDP applications sounds great.
Yeah i was at the one in Boston too.
Yeah i just cracked those open...and looked at the packaging a little closer. I saw the enterprise key and was like wow i must have missed something i dont think they give away the keys to the kingdom this easily.
1 Year is plenty to get a good feel for it though.

Yes, this is pretty cool. If you have any experience with Citrix Metaframe, it's a very similar concept.

Yea this is just cheaper as you don't need the citrix license as well.
We are starting to talk to a few clients about adding terminal servers using 08 because of this. Kinda sucks how the server 08 is a year trial from the ms event though. I got a retail boxed copy of 03 enterprise and 03 sbs premium. With any luck I will get a few copies in the mail to play with again.

I upgraded my test domain at work to 2008 last month. No issues so far, it's only running as a DC and DNS server though. Can't wait to get some read only DCs deployed to remote sites and see how that works out.

That feature is going to be useful to us as well. Who knew the "BDC" would make a comeback. :p

Nope, it's been final for about a month or so. It was around mid-February when I got my copy from TechNet.
Lots of interesting features that I've yet to play with. Server core looks awesome. And I'm hoping Hyper-V turns out well...at $28, the price is right for sure.:p I just hope it can hold a candle to VMware.
