Yep. You can install them in any orientation.
The Dells where I work have the hard drives already installed upside down.

Cool. I had to install a couple drives upside down so the cables would reach. Long (out of spec) PATA cables have given me problems in the past so I didn't want to go that route again.

yep, totally true... the earth's gravitational field will reverse polarity on the HD's magnetics & have catastrophic results..
Don't tell me you have your processor oriented right-side-up as well  !!!

I'm not taking your joke too seriously but I do know that in the past some disks have had problems with anything other than "normal" orientation.
It's not totally absurd to imagine that bearings might wear differently.

the problem with very old disks was that the you had to keep them in the orientation that they were originally low level formatted (format c:\ is not low level formatting by the way). If you put them on their sides when they were formatted flat, the gravity would alter the way that heads travelled and the drive couldn't find the right sectors.

Doesn't so much matter these days as drives are designed to withstand several G's of shock while operating, and many more while parked. Changing the orientation of the 1G of force it is subjected to just sitting there isn't going to do any harm.
