View Full Version : So, I'm probably going to get an Areca 1220

So, I recently ran into some pretty bad issues with software raid, mostly my own fault but anyways I've got some money to throw at the problem, and I want a bigger array anyway, so I've decided to go with a real hardware raid card. After looking around, I decided that I wanted an 8-port card, since it's cheaper than 2 4-port cards and I'll probably go over 4 drives and never go over 8.

The purpose of the machine is a home fileserver that sits headless in my closet. Currently housed in a Coolermaster stacker with Supermicro hotswap bays. Running Ubuntu server and mdadm software raid. Requirements for the system are to work with linux, provide an interface to do all (or most) of the raid functionality remotely, for hot swapping to work correctly, and for the card itself to work well in consumer level hardware (this is an old s939 machine with an old consumer level asus s939 board that has 2 x16 pci-e slots, I'm assuming I can use one of these slots for something other than video, since there's specific hardware switches to enable sli on the board). Actual speeds aren't overly important (as long as they are reasonably on par), as it will mostly be accessed via Gigabit ethernet.

Is there any reason to not go with this areca?

The plan is to migrate my current array to this (it's empty right now), and get 4 750GB drives to form a second array on the device.

Idea sounds good to me. I love Areca never had a problem with their cards. You should easily max out your gigbit connection but what you're copying to probably won't be able to keep up with the writes. So you should be fine performance wise.
