I bought the retail package from tigerdirect local store about 3 years ago. Now, I checked the warranty online and it says expired 15-May-2005. How does this suppose to make sense? Bought it without warranty or got ripped off?

Did the hard drive go bad?

was it sealed in plastic? sounds like someone took an OEM drive and put it into a retail box, maybe even resealed it too. i've never liked tigerdirect.

in many cases - the warranty starts when the drive is manufactured. (at least that is the line I've been told before)

Back in 2002 or 2003 I got a WD Caviar 80GB "refurbished" drive from Dell as a replacement for a dying Maxtor. I plugged the serial number into the WD website to register it and I got the full warranty period for a retail drive from that date. :p

Can't really remember, but I guess it was sealed. I think I bought the drive in June, 2005, so it was already expired when I got it.

Did you try emailing them the serial number and a copy of the invoice to see whats up?
