Anyone else having this issue? I had Vista on my machine for a while, then had my motherboard go out. I couldn't get another decent socket 939 board, so I did a full 'core replacement' with a Athlon X2 6400+, Asus M2N32-SLi deluxe, and 2 GB of DDR2-800. Ever since that upgrade, when I try to install Vista, it runs for 5-15 minutes and then hard locks.
The same system works fine with 32 and 64 bit XP, but both 32 and 64 bit versions of Vista hang. It is not driver related, that I can tell, since it does it with the default drivers included with Vista and the updated drivers I install later.
If anyone has any advice, I'd love to hear it.

I would say the hard locks are either a driver issue or some type of hardware problem. Maybe try running memtest or the memtest that comes with the Vista install DVD and then we can go from there.

When I bought the MB, CPU, and memory, I ran Ultimate Boot CD and put it through both versions of Memtest and the MS memory test to make sure everything was stable. I know that's good. I also ran a CPU torture test, since the 6400+ is so close to the architecture's limit. I wanted to be sure I had fully stable hardware before I installed it.
The rest of the hardware is as follows:
HT Omega Striker 7.1 sound card
Geforce 8800GTX video
2X 320GB 7200.10 hard drives (not raided)
1X 150GB WD Raptor
Asus DVD-RW with lightscribe
Lite-On DVD-RW
Floppy drive
Tagan ITZ 900W or a 600W Silverstone power supply (The Silverstone was running the 12V rail for the CPU at only 11.78-11.85V, so I replaced it with the Tagan a couple weeks ago.)
All drives except the floppy are SATA. I have an Antec P180B case. so it is quite roomy and air flow is not a problem.
I just thought of something. It could be a USB device that is causing this. I'm going to disconnect the USB devices to see if it will stay stable, then plug one is at a time until I get the lock ups again. I have about a dozen different USB devices, including mouse and keyboard.

Tried everything over the weekend. Detached all USB devices and use PS2 standard keyboard and mouse, used a different video card, took out the sound card and used on-board sound. I still have Vista, on a fresh build every time, hang up after about 10-15 minutes of use.
Anyone have any ideas? Is it the chipset? Anyone hear of issues with the Nvidia (AMD) 590SLi chipset and Vista? Maybe an issue with the Athlon X2 6400+?
Uhh.. you have XP and you still fight with that POS?

I have the same issue here. I know everything is working fine hardware wise... I just cant tell if it is a driver or software issue. The computer just freezes every 15 mins max.

MSI p6n Platinum NVidia Nforce 650i SLI mobo bios v1.5 w/ northbridge fan cooler
2x2gb OCZ DDR2 800 SLI ram w/ corsair memory cooler
2x PNY Verto 8600gts OC 512mb DDR3 128bit cards in SLI mode 169.25 drivers
Western Digital Caviar SE16 WD2500ks 7200rpm 250gb drive 16mb cache
Samsung SH-S203N 20x dvd burner
Sound Blaster Audigy SE sound card
Cooler Master CM Stacker 830 case with 1 rear, 1 top, 1 front, 3 side door 120mm fans

Well, it finally went away. Some patch installed and the problem went away. Now that I have a new hard drive, I'm going to have to start over again. We'll see if I can duplicate the fix this time.
