View Full Version : C: On Server Getting Too Small

Title sums it up. This is on a SBS 2003.

Server 2003 (at least as far as I know) doesn't have system restore. How on earth can I get some space back?

The only other option is resizing a partition, which seems rather dangerous to me being this is a server and all....

Follow the link if you want to install System Restore on Server 2003. Be aware of that if its a real server, the best way to minimize downtime should be to make a new backup, format and make a proper size of the harddrive and finally restore the backup.

Edit: Forgot link...

Another option is to make an image of the drive or directly transfer over the data to a new hdd

this happened to me after the recommended size (according to the sbs manual) for C: was way too small. i just resized with paragon partition manager ... remotely... and it worked fine afterwards.

Is your exchange database and logs on the c drive by chance? Unless you moved them thats where sbs put them. Go under the system manager and check and move them to a data partition. You can also move the sql and iis stuff as well if it is there.

Using Paragon Partition Manager would be the easiest way to go, provided you have additional drive capacity available to you. Are you running any kind of hardware RAID on this box?

Not sure where it is at, is it a big deal to move them?

Very interesting. Is this something I install on my desktop or the server?

It is a RAID5, yes.
My data partition can be shrunk down a bit (Plenty big), and then my C:\ partition can be expanded, is my plan.

Awesome. Good luck man! :D

Edit:
Just make sure you have a good backup (and a good second *secret* backup) before you go fooling around with the partitions. How many logical drives and RAID arrays are there on that puppy? It sounds like there is one big RAID5 hosting both C: and D:. Is that correct?

Pretty easy to move the files. You can do this to check where they are too.

Yep- 3 disks as RAID 5, partitioned out with 3 partitions, C:\, D:\, and then an S:\ partition for paging file.
