I'm running Vista ultimate edition, and the stupid Windows' firewall is annoying as piss. I've disabled the service only to find out it cripples RDP as well.
That's like taking the stock tires off your car and putting on wider ones, and the entire car stops working. Way to go Microsuck.

Why disable the firewall? It's pretty much unobtrusive, to be honest. I don't see how or why it would disable RDP, but I can't say I've ever disabled my firewall. I guess I should clarify back a bit. Are you trying to connect TO the Vista Ultimate machine?

I disagree the firewall in vista is nothing but annoying. I'm behind a NAT there is no need for a firewall on my machine. It is constantly asking if I want to block or unblock applications. I want it completely disabled, and yes it does cripple RDP if you disable it.

I'll have to try that out, and to be honest, on three Pcs, running Vista for a year now, I think I've seen the firewall ask for a prompt maybe once...if that. I'll try disabling mine when I get a chance. I agree in part it isn't that effective when behind a NAT, but it's never given me any reason to want to disable it before.
You also didn't answer my question about which direction you are trying to set up RDP in.

once you click to unblock an app it will never ask to unblock it again

Trying to connect to my home pc from work.

Well believe me it does. I had RDP enabled, the firewall disabled, I had a popup tell me that I couldn't use RDP without Windows' firewall. If Windows' firewall or any firewall for that matter never pops up and asks if you want to allow access to a certain application, then you must not be using the firewall correctly.
Edit: This guy is getting the same thing I am.

Looks like there's a workaround, which is just retarded. Ugh, it's ok though, as long as I don't have to click unblock all the time. I guess the service won't matter as much. Even though some remnants of the firewall will still be working.

I personally think there was a bit of exaggeration going on.
Having tons of applications I need to run, I recently got a new notebook. I recall seeing a firewall prompt a total of ONE time. As someone else said: Once you allow it, it won't ask you again.
NAT can only protect you so much. If you have a good AV client, and everything internal is kept clean, probably not a TON to worry about. However I still wouldn't trust it 100%. Something lose on the network = free reign.
