Hard Drive not working help please!!

So I am helping a buddy out fixing a computer. The computer is not recognizing the hard drive and it is making a weird sound when it spins and keeps doing it like it is looking for files. He has only had this problem for a week. It was working and gave him a ntdlr is missing so he tried to load an operating system onto it and it loaded it onto his d drive. I am thinking the hard drive is dead, but was wondering if there was anyway to get the info off of it.
