I am ditching an old network setup for a new Terminal Services network.

I am wanting to run 2 TS servers in a cluster and 1 DNS, DHCP, AD server (with one backup server)

I have 200 users but only about a maximum of 30 users online at any one time and only 15 of these will be Using terminal services at the most.

I understand that for every concurrent terminal service user I need a terminal services licence and for every server I need a windows 2003 5 Cal

If I have 2 x TS servers does it still work with a central licence pool that all services take from, hence only needing 15 TS licences?

For the DNS, DHCP, AD server I am thinking if I go per device I will only need about 30 as that is the total maximum number of systems connected to the network but do I also need 5 more CALs for the server it self?

in short

Terminal Services Server 1 + Licence server

5 CALs for the server it self, 30 Terminal Services CALS

Terminal Services Server 2

5 CALs for the server - Takes TS licences from server 1

Main Domain Controller

5 CALs for the server - 30 CALs for the devices attached

I know this currently has no head room for network printers etc etc but I can get to that when I need to.

So confused and 3 phone calls to Microsoft and I’m still no closer.

You only need as mnany TS cals as users connect concurrently to each machine

So you have 2 TS boxes and 5 users connect to each you need to have 10 cals.
Make one of the TS boxes the licensing server.
