Hey guys I'm building a new system and it will have 4GB's of RAM. So that means I'll be using a 64bit OS. I currently have XP64 which I never used but will give it a try. I can't upgrade to Vista at the current moment due to most of the money I have going to the system. I was just wondering, 32bit apps can run on a 64bit OS, correct? I know that some 32bit apps have 16bit installers that could kill it. But I mainly want to know if common programs such as Firefox, AIM, Office2003, CounterStrike Source, WoW, Warcraft 3, will they work? Any and all suggestions are appreciated, thanks.

Pretty much all the major programs out there work just fine.

Vista is much better with compatiblity I have found (for 64bit), but still you should be fine with most major things out there.

I think AIM had some issues on 64bit, but you could always use (and should use...) one of the 3rd party AIM clients like pidgin, trillian, meebo, etc.

Only other one right off hand I can think of that does not work is iTunes...works to playback songs and such but the CD Burning tool and iPod Connector do not work. (more just because Apple is being a stick in the mud considering they have a 64bit OSX version...)

I'm starting to think this whole x64 OS Topic should have a sticky. These questions are asked over and over and over. Instead of finding random links, or just telling people "Google Is Your Friend", at least there'd be a constructive thread to send them to.

I have used google. The reason I cam here is because instead of looking at link after link that states random and vague information I thought the community could just give me some direct answers.

I use Vista Home Premium 64 bit for all my games and have not had a single issue with anything recent. (released in the last 2 years)

Dont use AIM,Firefox, or other nonOS stuff except for RivaTuner and DriverCleaner, both of which work fine.

I have a separate HDD with XP for anything that I think would/could be FUBAR'd by a 64 bit OS.

That's exactly why I'd like to see a sticky on the subject, so the clear answers can be put in one spot. I didn't mean my first post to sound like I was being rude. If I wanted to be rude, I would have just told you to use the search feature here, because the clear answers are here, in this subforum.

But people don't read stickies anymore either so that isn't a viable option or solution any more than the 4 or 5 "XP x64" or 64 bit related posts I just saw when I got back online 10 mins ago.

There's no solution to people that don't read, and in a text-based communication medium, that's rather sad but it's how things go. So we end up getting the same questions asked over and over and over again and we don't have much choice but to answer them.

No Aim or Firefox? That sucks.

What are you talking about? Firefox works just fine as do most programs out there.

Firefox works fine...as do most programs out there. AIM does not work but it is a POS anyways, just use one of the free alternatives like Trillian, pidgin, meebo, etc.

He meant HE doesn't use it. Some people speak in fragment sentences.

Firefox works fine in 64bit. But IIRC, it's Adobe (Macromedia) Flash that doesn't work in 64 bit yet.

That's not a problem though, you can just use a 32-bit browser and the 32-bit Flash.

Yup, exactly.

IE 32bit and 64bit are included, so you can use 32bit for flash.

Thanks for the replies, I didn't want anyone to get upset so I'm sorry if I'm asking the same things. Just a couple of questions?

1. What does IIRC mean?
2. When I install Flash it gives an option for either 32 or 64bit? If this isn't the case, are there 2 seperate install files one for the 32bit and one for the 64bit?
3. Itunes doesn't seem to work for 64bit OSes, anyone have Anapod and know if it works?

Thanks everyone.

1. If I Recall Correctly.
2. No, it'll just install into 32-bit browsers that you're using - there is no 64-bit Flash.
3. iTunes itself works, but I've heard of problems with iPod connectivity, and it certainly won't burn CDs. I don't have an iPod or Anapod though.

I can confirm, without a doubt, that iTunes works. I ran it in Vista x64. In fact I updated the firmware in my iPod Nano a couple of times with it.

However, DEVICE compatibility with 64-bit Windows for Apple hardware is limited to the pre-iPhone stuff. iPhone and up (newer iPods) do not have 64-bit Windows drivers. This is purely Apple's fault, and not going to 64-bit Windows just for this means you let Apple control you. I prefer not to buy those products.

Thats true, letting Apple enslave us is bad. I was just wondering since I have an old IPod. But i'm considering getting a zune. LOL

Well, I just upgraded to Home Premium 64 bit today for both my desktop and laptop. I was a little apprehensive to do so on my desktop, but everything went perfect. I have a fairly new hardware setup on the desktop, and drivers were no problem with the exception of my new laptop.

Antivir works great as does all the rest of the programs I reinstalled. Couldn't be happier with the upgrade.....:)

Only problem I ran into was with the 64 bit upgrade on the Toshiba laptop, everything fine but the IGP ATI 1200m drivers. I guess ATI doesn't support laptop video drivers, and Toshiba doesn't support 64 bit vid card drivers. Couldn't get the drivers from ATI to load.

Anyone have a way to get Toshiba mobile 64 bit drivers to load?
