no ..if you do the option to "repair" after you have to hit "F8" to agree to the EULA ..then everything stays intact ..

As long as it's the same exact version that you originally installed then like what AMD_RULES said go through the license agreement, select repair and you will be fine.

yep, it's gonna be from the same CD used to install the operating system...all legit

Does the repair generally help?

It has helped me with "odd" problems in the past ..I never had it make anything worse , so it's worth a shot

A repair install is an Inplace-Upgrade.

It's the same as if you stuck the CD in your running windows and said upgrade me...

ok, i'm attempting to give this a shot as i'm pretty much shit outta luck right now with this plug and play issue...

Once i boot the XP cd, it says press R to do repair. SO i press R
Then it comes to a command prompt / dos type screen...

what command do i need to type in order to repair the plug and play in windows XP?

OS: Windows XP Professional 32 Bit

You are in the recovery console. You do not want to be there.

Look here (http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/helpandsupport/learnmore/tips/doug92.mspx) for a little help.

Also note that doing the repair will remove all patches, updates & service packs from your machine that are not on the CD being used.

Also look here (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/943144) for possible help after you do a reinstall.

as stated before ... wait until after you have to hit "F8" to agree to the EULA , then AFTER THAT ..select the repair option ;)

ok, my bad. Thanks for the clarification...

I don't have to reactivate windows do I? That wouldn't be a problem i'm just wondering

you will have to reactivate ..it might give you 3 days ..or it might not let you log back in until you activate

well the repair just made things worse than b4  :(

Now I can't even log into my computer. It goes to the damn "restarting repair window" which is a pita.

I was able to get most of the repair done, but it "Freezes" where it says "35 Minutes Remaining". I left it on to repair for almost 5 hours and it stayed at that the "35 Mins remaining" screen...

So now i'm just gonna have to reinstall XP fully which is not what I had originally intended or wanted to do, but o well

So now i'm 100% SOL :D lmao

Can I still activate windows through the net or do i gotta get on the phone this time?

Thanks anyways for the tips on the repair, but i'll never attempt it again ;)

edit: Is there anyway to cancel or delete the repair? Like say install the hdd in another compouter and delete the "repair" file (if one exists)?

are you sure you don't have some hardware failure going on somewhere? ..I have never had a repair install not work on good hardware

if you are able to pull the drive out and access it in another computer , first make sure the virus protection is all up to date in the computer before you put your drive into it .and then scan the drive once installed ..then pull off any of your important data ..then just put it back into your computer and reformat and all that .. but again , I'd runs some scans on your drive and memory to check for errors ..could be your processor going buggy or getting to hot ..or mobo gone goofy .. or even the PSU not pulling it's weight anymore of which one or more of the mentioned problems isnt going to be fixed by a repair or a reformat and reinstall more than likely ..

well the psu is fine, voltages all normal, cpu is running stock speeds, around 28C, motherboard may be the issue, but i haven't had any problems b4 this repair. I Have two hdds, one for the OS (160GB) And one for DATA (250GB). So if I need to reformat, my data is ok. I've done some memory test and the memory is fine as well....

I have no clue what the problem is, but once again, it may be the motherboard since I was having problems with plug and play. I'll have to reinstall windows and i'll let you know if i still have this problem or not...

Hopefully it's not the motherboard because I was planing on upgrading next year to Nehalem.

In the windows directory there should be a setupapi.log and a setupact.log. Examining those logs might tell you what driver Windows was trying to install, might be a start.

But you definitely have some bad hardware somewhere...

35 Minutes is during PnP enumeration.

Update:

Did an install of Windows Vista Ultimate x64 and it installed smoothly on my hardware (See sig). Plug and play fully works again so i think on my XP Pro install, that was the problem. No problem with motherboard, memory, or psu, thankfully!

The only problem i'm having is getting some of my old software installed onto Vista... but i'll figure that out later :D

when installing your software in Vista , be sure to right click on the .exe file to install the program and "run as administrator"
