Your using a 32 bit operating system. It can only address a total of 4GB of total memory, which is split across your RAM and Video Memory, among other items.
You'll need to move to a 64 bit version of an OS in order to use that full 4GB of RAM along with other components.

I've heard from some of my friend that told me if I use the 64bit it will read as 4GB memory instead of 2.78GB. I never try 64bit [I have a windows vista ultimate 32 and 64 in a case but never installed it] I am using windows xp professional SP2 32bit

Article on Wikipedia regarding 64-bit (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/64-bit).
As for your system performance with the new RAM, is it slower than before, or not as fast as you thought it would be?
