I have been having this problem for quite a while now and have been unable to locate a solution. Maybe one of you have some kind of clue as to what is going on with my system.

Whenever I plug a new or existing hard drive into my system the New Hardware Wizard goes to work but shortly hangs while trying to install the Disk Drive drivers.

For instance, I recently installed XP onto my RAID0 setup (which has an intel-based chipset). Along with the array I have 4 other individual drives which I just use for storage. All drives are manufactured by Seagate.

If I unplug just one of the drives (it does not matter which drive), boot into XP, shutdown, plug the drive back in, and lastly boot the New Hardware Wizard pops up and hangs when trying to install "Disk Drive" drivers. If I reboot I no longer have any keyboard or mouse functionality.

I have the newest Intel Matrix and chipset software installed and am still having this problem.

If anyone has ever heard of this problem please let me know. I have been pulling my hair out over this issue every time I plug in an existing drive or install a new one.

Try installing a 3rd party controller. For curosity, what happens if you hot plug it?

Thanks for the reply.

I have been messing around all morning and have been trying different combinations. I really do not want to use a 3rd party controller as I had originally purchased my board because it has 6 SATA ports on it.

Is it even possible to hot swap a internal SATA drive without damaging it?
