So my cousins want a new computer for Christmas and my aunt is wanting to buy them one. They both play WOW quite a bit and she just wants to make sure that it will work on Vista. So I came to the experts, anyone had any luck or problems?

Thanks for the response, noticed the true life display in your sig. What is the diff. in that monitor and the regular widescreen 19" monitor?

Its a 17" widescreen system. The difference is the quality of the display. The truelife can do up to 1920x1200 resolution, as opposed to the regular XGA type screens which top out at 1440x900.

This is what all the Vista scare mongering does....

Yes it works fine under Vista, practically all software does and has done since launch day.

So true. I didnt move to vista until about 4 months ago, but EVERYTHING i have hardware/software/etc/etc works perfectly fine under vista. I have yet to have a problem. I havent even seen a bluescreen yet.

Just make sure they don't get stuck with onboard video.

Just about any discrete, dedicated videocard will work these days. But the onboard 3d chips are still a bit limited. Intel's onboard, Dad's computer with I think X3100 (The G965 Intel Desktop board with hardware T&L), can limp along playing it at 1280x1024... but it's choppy and not real pleasant.

Depending on your system, you may have driver problems. My old X2/6800 GT system locked up under WoW and nothing else.

Sounds like the OP may be planning a pre-built, which will likely be Intel, so that will cure the rest of the stability risk.

WoW addons can be tricky in vista, what with admin escalation prompts unless you relax the file permissions in the wow folder under program files, and the fact that vista uses the virtual store to store info, unless you do said permission relaxing, so if you have an addon problem in your WTF folder, or an addon gets installed in the virtual store accidentally, you can have problems with updates and/or resetting. Also wow has to be run as an admin on patch days to dl and install the patch.

Based on the WoW forums, some people have had issues, but nothing that can't be worked around as far as I can see.

WoW is so outdated that it'll run fine on Vista. I never had a problem.

Flawless. I'm running it on a 7900GTX, Core 2 Quad, 4gb RAM, Vista Ultimate x64!

I just turned off the security dialog crap, and everything works including all mods.
