Depends on whether or not you want to spend some cash or if you want a free solution....
I picked up the Huey Pro on Newegg with free shipping for $99 and so far its been great. It has basically a small dongle that when calibrating you put on your screen and then it will measure the color output on your monitor and create an ICC profile. It is a very very simplistic program that anyone can use and does seem to get pretty accurate results.
the Spyder2 is also an interesting product...the express version is cheap but is extremely crippled (no dual monitor support etc.) but the device is capable of working with a lot of third party programs available for free which the Huey is not which does seem to make it a better value if you want more options with tweaking...as of now I think the Huey is only supported by Argyll beta.
On the other side there are free software solutions that I am not as familiar with that allow you to manually adjust settings...this is generally not recommended if a hardware solution is available because they will get much more accurate results than you would just eyeballing it...I am sure someone here will have some recommendations but I know I personally hear the Nokia Monitor Test recommended quite often and a quick google should bring you to it.

thanks yeah, average joe here that just wants to make sure it's as close to being right as i can without spending money (i am running a 19" WS LCD only because i got it for $99 on BF if that tells you anything)
the Nokia Test doesnt run under Vista or 64bit OS'es anyways...not sure where the rub is, but it refuses to install on Vista Ult 64bit
the Spyder2 is also an interesting product...the express version is cheap but is extremely crippled (no dual monitor support etc.) but the device is capable of working with a lot of third party programs available for free which the Huey is not which does seem to make it a better value if you want more options with tweaking...as of now I think the Huey is only supported by Argyll beta.

There are a couple but the two that come to mind are S2Fly and ColorHCFR.
