64 bit for sure, not only is it much better but it will let you use all that ram you have :)

64bit... if at all possible dual boot with XP-64bit and Vista-64bit... recent articles showing XP expecting a good performance boost over Vista with the SP3 soon to be released.

Yep you'll definitely want x64 with your 4GB of RAM.

XP64 is based on Win2K3 code, not XP32. There won't be a "SP3 for XP64" until there is a SP3 for Win2K3. For reference, SP2 for Win2K3 just came out earlier this year.

I personally love XP64, but I wouldn't recommend it on anything more than a vanilla box without oddball hardware.

i wouldnt even bother personally, everything works on 64 bit vista for me just fine and i use tons of apps. i dont know how everyone used to complain about vista but maybe these little updates they release every so often really has changed something because my experience is flawless. i cant even remember the last time i logged into xp. im about to delete that piece of crap.

Their are multiple benefits of a dual boot and/or triple boot setup.
First if one OS gets a corrupted registry, virus, corrupted file, etc... it's easy to boot into another OS finish important work/games then fix the busted OS at your convenience.
Second a multi-boot environment makes it easier to fix a busted OS.
Third one type of OS might have better performance and/or game stability for some games than another type of OS.
Fourth if a problem occurs it's easy to discover if it's a hardware problem or software problem with a multi_boot setup simply by booting into another OS. A single OS will not provide this benefit.

I'm not sure why people think on is better (for everyone, blanket statement) or why no one searches for the other 2,732 times it's been asked.

The answer is and always has been, whichever fits your needs and system. Check if your hardware and software are compatible with x64, and that will be your answer. If not, stick with x86. The x64 platform is the future and allows for more system memory, so it makes sense in the long run. However, if you have some incompatibility that keeps you at x86 right now, so be it...then that's the best for your system. It's as simple as that.

Dual boot XP32 and Vista64, cause you never know when your gonna find a really cool 16bit program or how long till theres a 100% functioning 16bit emulator of Vista64.

Currently I'm running 32bit, but I'm planning on going 64bit atleast with Vista since there are actual programs now that take advantage of 64bits.

Thanks, XP32 and Vista64 sounds like the way to go.

I've had 64-bit Vista damn near since launch, and I just ran into the first instance of a problem that made me cobble together an old 32-bit box: disc burning.

Mind you, Nero works fine and dandily, but the good ol' tools of yesterday: CDRWIN, DiscJuggler, and many many others that need/depend on an ASPI layer don't work under Vista, so I needed another box to burn console-compatible CDs with any degree of success.

I'm all about Vista x64 - been running it for over a month now and love it.

A few bummers about it - no good x64 Citrix client available and Zonealarm has no plans of making a 64-bit version of their firewall.

That sucks.

you can use vista firewall control to allow or disallow incoming/outgoing connections and set a rule for them on vista's own firewall which is up to par with any other these days.

personally i think third party firewalls are just about obsolete after using this. its 64 bit and lowww resources too.

Quick question for folks that already did the switch, could I just format my Vista32 partition and install Vista64 without it screwing up my existing dual boot with XP32?
