I see the term deep rumbling being thrown around, is it any louder than a SCSI drive is?

When I purchased my Raptor the whole the Raptor noise issue worried me. I installed it and I can barely hear it. I really wouldnt worry about its noise and to me its un-noticable.

I use it as my game drive. its ok, its a low rumble. fast muthu though -- I'll tolerate a lil noise for the performance

Well thats good to know, is there a difference between the Raptor and Raptor X? Other than how the drive looks?

the head/seek chatter drives me insane :(

Sounds kind of like a coffee grinder "crunching" minus the motor noise. Depends on how well-sealed your case is, really....my case is wide open and on my desk two feet from my head, and it's pretty loud.

The Raptor sounds just like a coffee percolator. It's loud, but not THAT annoying. It has a lower pitch sound to it. Sounds like your typical HDD in the late 90s early 2000; very similar to a 13.6gb 7200rpm Maxtor drive I had.

I've got 2 Raptors in RAID0 and they're almost completely inaudible. I also have a VERY quiet computer using all low-speed 120mm fans.

The key is to have silicon mounts for all harddrives(i.e. Antec P180B or Solo)

No noise issues at all.

That said, the WD 2500KS's are much louder than the Raptors.

No.

No.

A bit more specific, Raptor is way quieter than 15k SCSI

Wow, I have a pair of WD2500KS and can hardly hear those!

I've got a Raptor too in a P180. It's inaudible, to my ears, compared to the fans around it.

I have a Raptor 150GB in an Antec Super Lanboy and the only time when I can hear the drive is when I am transferring large files around.

i have three 36gb raptors ain raid 0 and i can hear them but i like hearing the hard drives so i know the system is working.

ill also agree on the maxtor comment as my 15gb maxtor sounds like a jet taking off when it spins up.

I have two in raid 0. I can't hear them over my fans. Every once in a while, while loading a game or some big file I'll get the coffee grinder noise but other than that, pretty silent IMHO.

It's the loudest component in my desktop, but it's tolerable as long as it's not churning away while I try to sleep.

Cool tnx for the info guys, I used to use an one of my dads old workstations with 2 SCSI drives in it back in the mid 90s.
Sounds like it will be much quieter than that. As to the raptor and raptor X I'm guessing its only the casing the drive is shiped in.

Mine is obnoxious and loud as hell. I don't think I would buy one again. If I happen to be trying to sleep when my computer decides to run a complete virus scan, you can be assured I will wake up and shut the damn thing off. It's only a tiny, tiny bit faster than a regular hard drive. I noticed a difference when dragging files around between drives, but not much...

I have 2 Raptors in RAID 0 and its a bit louder than your average 7,200 rpm SATA, but certainly not loud enough to be annoying, but everyone has their own tolerances when is comes to noise aggravation;) TBH I like the noise, it sounds like power, I guess that sound appeals to me like loud Harleys appeal to bikers. And the drives only become audible when there is intensive reading and writing, I hear the drives when doing virus scans, loading Windows, loading game maps, and searching for files. you're not going to hear much of anything when you're browsing the web or playing games. One thing is for sure though, the Raptor X, which is the clear window model, is certainly not worth the noise it puts off, you'll hear it more than you'll be kneeling down to check out that funky actuator action. I had a Raptor X and returned it because it was so loud, too loud, the clear window feature doesn't justify the noise in my opinion.

It's pretty freakn' loud. Going from a regular HDD to the Raptor was like when my cousin removed the stock exhaust in his honda and replaced it with one of those obnoxious aftermarket fart cans. I'm getting rid off my Raptor because of the small capacity, but I'm going to take this oportunity to get something quiet. Hopefully I won't lose much performance by going the Raid 0 route this time.

I do quite a bit of video editing, so deal with large files on a regular basis, it sounds like this drive could be right up my alley, to be honest I did like the sound on the old SCSI drives, I normally shut my cpu off every night neway.

I can't hear my Raptor, then again its mounted using rubber spacers. I don't know how bad it would be fastened right to the chassis. The method of mounting has a huge affect on how much vibration/sound is reverberated in the case.

Curious if anyone knows the sound difference between the old 74GB raptors and the newer 150GB RaptorX? My 74 GBwas a little loud from time to time but it also died yesterday. So I'm not sure if the noise was normal or the sound of a dying drive.

The old Raptors (GD) have 8mb cache while the new Raptors (ADFD) have 16mb cache.
