Is the new WMP11 junk??

I had an Acer 3000 with a Sempron 3000 and 1GB ram and 4200RPM HDD with WinXP and even on a fresh load, WMP would skip while playing my MP3's at times...

NOW

I have a Dell 9400 with a Dual Core 7200 and 3GB ram and 7200RPM Seagate HDD and it STILL skips at times... I open up ANY other media player and NO PROBLEMS(winamp, quicktime, realplayer, and even Nero showtime for pitysake).... what gives?? Is MS really this incompetant?? WMP10 never did this.

QJ

P.S. BOTH ARE LAPTOPS FOR THE LESS INFORMED.

And thats another reason i dont use WMP. I only use it rip cd's (mp3 192kbps), because it organizes it in the my music folder beautifully, but outside of that, i wouldnt touch it.

Ever since switching to Vista back in Jan, I have only used WMP11, and I can't say I've had any type of skipping or distortion. In fact last night I watched Transformers on DVD using only WMP11, and it looked and sounded great.

I hate you! :D

LOL, j/k... glad to hear it though...

I will mention that my Acer couldn't play video clips I took with my Canon digitcal camera(properly anyhow... terrible lag), with WMP11, but would play them FLAWLESSLY with Quicktime, or PowerDVD.

My bad, i would watch movies with it, but thats a slim chance since i have an entertainment center to do that with.

Can't say that I really have any issues with MP3 / WMA playback at all. Even with all sort of processing turned on, works like a champ. I found it's a lot better than WMP10 when it comes to playlists, etc (still a little counter-intuitive, IMO... just takes getting used to).

When I move into the video side, things change a little bit. I have a number of clips that play a lot better using something like MPC. I've never been able to tell if it's the amount of resources that WMP is using or a codec issue, or my hardware just being far too out of date to be able to playback a lot of the newer stuff (most likely reason).

If MP3 playback is skipping only in WMP, start playing around with some of the options (i.e. the speed of playback bar; that one had me going for a little bit one time) and see if you can't track it down.

I can say that I've had a single problem with Media player... it's done everything it's supposed to.

If you open the VOB file on a DVD directly, it can cause some problems if your computer goes to sleep, or the screensaver kicks in. But if you open the DVD, it should be fine.

I have been playing with it.... it seems to 'spike' my processor usage to about 50%, then skips, and then usage goes back down to like 5 or 10%..... about every 2 or 3 minutes.....

I realize there are ALL kinds of factors here... but guess what? All other media players have NO problems whatsoever.... that's what boggles my mind.

It almost sounds like it's searching for new files or something but, man, I didn't think that it did that every 2-3 minutes. Maybe it's looking on a network share, USB drive? But, the second machine definitely outclasses either of the machines I use... you'd think they'd have the muscle.

I dunno. Every 2-3 minutes is pretty regular. It's heavier on resources than other players so maybe there's something else going on it doesn't like. Then, you could just use another player.

I AM playing the files off of a network share... you suppose that's it? But then again, I have been using Nero Showtime for the last 3 hours and not one glitch....

Just switch to Foobar2000 and call it a day. :)

Or, if you haven't done so already, try going to the Privacy tab in options (I think you need to have Classic Menus enabled for this) and uncheck the options for "Display media information from the Internet" and "Update music files by retrieving..." Then look under Library and click on the "Configure Sharing" button to see that sharing is disabled. That should stop it from trying to download something while playing files.

Since I went to vista, I've used WMP11 exclusively for my music library and movie functions; I haven't had any issues whatsoever.
