hey can someone tell me about gamecube modding and if there is any modchips that you don't have to solder in.... i apologize if this is a grey area and is not allowed on the forums and feel free to shut it down then.

There's just the Viper and Qoob, both of which are solder. They're probably not being made anymore (unlikely, since I just bought a Saturn chip to finally try out some Saturn hacking).

Other fun things you can do are an region/LED hack (I've got mine setup with a dual-color LED, flip a switch and its either US/Orange or JP/Blue), internal Wavebird receiver (it's pretty sweet!), and you can add a SPDIF output if you've got the Component cable.

I didn't know about the SPDIF - thanks! I'm not an EE, so I doubt I'll be building the circuit to get it, but it's nice to know it's there.

build a circuit? all you have to do is solder the wires to the contact points ;) dedication and precision

I have a viper chip in my gamecube (useless, if you ask me).

I was planning on doing the internal wavebird mod but never got around to it.

I'm probably going to be selling the gamecube now though.

From what I understand, the digital audio output on the Gamecube isn't actually SPDIF - it's some other format that has to get converted to SPDIF. This doesn't look that hard, but it does involve some circuitry, if what I read is correct.

Anyone know of a good flash cart that works with the Gameboy Player? I've heard some don't...

No, you need a Toslink transmitter (well you could do it w/ coax too, just need an extra resistor) from Cirrus or TI or similar to convert the BCK, SCK and DATA into a proper signal for your receiver to eat.
