Since when is IE7 a critical update? It's just annoying seeing as I don't use IE at all. This should be classed as optional for updates.

Given the features and the fact that it's by far the best version of IE ever, I'd agree with it being a necessary update. Also, when the browser is wrapped into the OS, it makes sense as well. IE7 is usually ranked right about on par with Firefox, so it's a damn good browser.

Previous IE versions are no longer being updated for new security exploits.
Even if you don't use IE as a web browser, parts of it are used for other internet-accessing functions of the OS. That combination of circumstances now makes it a 'critical update'. Simple concept, really, which has little to do with what you use as a 'frame' around the web pages you view.

Given that certain apps ( rather large apps at that ) rely on IE versions, it damn well should be an option update.
Were it just a web browser, it'd be different. I still wouldn't like it, but it'd be different. But IE is integral in so many different apps it's irresponsible of MS to call it anything other than an optional app. Especially since they're the ones that were pushing the whole integrate your app with IE crap.

I'm locked down tight so I'm not concerned about any security issues, but I really haven't payed attention to this "integrate you app with IE" crap. Gonna read more on this.
Fraggin' Microsoft....

Also realize, Microsoft is not catering their updates to you. They have to deal with the general public. Patching an exploit in the browser that the majority of customers use...that is critical.

This is the biggest reason why people should update. Many apps integrate IE for certain web functions and having it out of date leaves it open to exploitation.
