Hey guys i just bought a decent used laptop, came without a HD, ram, or power supply. It has a windows me sticker on it with the activation code. How much would it cost to buy the Windows ME CD. Thanks Stephen

Honestly, I'd consider any OS besides ME. You may be able to find one on Ebay, or get one from the manufacturer, but you really don't want to. I'd hit up Ebay or our FS/FT forums and find a Windows 98 license for it....or something more current, like Windows 2000. This is all assuming the laptop is too old for XP.

No Its a Compaq Presario 1700T series. P3 running 1000 Mhz. So should i go with 2000 or XP. Could it handle vista?

DeaconFrost

I wouldn't consider Vista at all. However, I've run XP on a P3 1 Ghz with 512 MB of memory, and it ran great.

Ok so where do i go from here. Where can i find a cheap Xp cd with code?

If you're a student, check with your school. if not, the same advice as above. Check on Ebay or our FS/FT forum.

Sounds like the perfect time to download and try out Ubuntu Linux.

Ya never know. It might work out perfect for you and it won't cost you a dime.

Even an OEM copy of XP is giong to cost around $125.

I have ME on one of my 4 PC's and have no issues with it. I use it for older games.

You might be able to buy the OS CD or recovery CD set from the manufacturer.

The link on this page can tell you if the WinME CD is available: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?lc=en&cc=us&docname=bph07143

This page has a screenshot tour of the newest version Ubuntu going final this month: http://lifehacker.com/software/screenshot-tour/a-look-at-ubuntu-710-gutsy-gibbon-rc1-311005.php

I installed OpenSuSE 10.3 last week and I'm liking it more than Ubuntu on my laptop. Everything just worked right after install, including the 3D desktop, power management and wireless.

Have you yet confirmed that you can obtain compatible RAM, HDD and power unit for the thing? If you can't locate and obtain those items it's sorta a waste of time worrying about what OS to run on it.

No no no get it right. They never pasted the alpha stage with it.

OP find a copy of xp to load on it. Just make sure you bump the memory up to 512 if you can.

I just bought a 20 Gig HD, Ive found a cheap power supply and i could easily find cheap ram for it here or online. I went looking and i really dont want to pay 100 somewhat dollars for an OS. That almost as much i paid for the laptop. Id rather get a free one than spend even more money that i just dont have. Thanks everybody for the help

I cant even say Windows Me without having flashbacks of its crappyness and me getting extremely pissed off at it.

Please consider anything else other then ME!

I have the HD and The Power supply on the way. My total for this P3 laptop is sitting around 105 dollars. so add around 30 for ram and thats a perfectly working laptop for 135.

He purchased the laptop. It's not an approach I'd have taken, but it's not one he should be criticised for taking either. If he's happy to accept the inherent risks then that's his business!

If the conponents purchased to add to it are actually compatible ones, and the thing actually works when it is put together, then it is indeed a relatively inexpensive laptop.

I used Windows ME for several years and liked it better than 98...

So did my friends, if for no other reason than the added driver support.

I third the Ubuntu nomination. Every time I had to reboot a Windows ME installation it wasn't because I wanted to, but because the blue screen told me to.

Who needs an ASUS EEE PC for $199 when you can get an Atlas77 EEE PC for $100. Both will run Linux :D

yeah, if your looking for an adventure go with a linux/unix based system.

But otherwise, run XP.

If you can't force it to boot from the ME CD, you could try the floppy boot disk. bootdisk.com (http://www.bootdisk.com/) might have a working copy.

Assuming you burned the .iso image properly, as an image, it sounds like you might just have to change the boot order in the BIOS.

I didn't think Windows install CDs were bootable until Win2000

I seem to remember having to use a boot disk the many times I had to reinstall ME, that was many years ago though.

Windows 98 and Windows ME were both bootable discs. I don't remember about Windows 95 though.

Ok, i tested it out on my old IBM thinkpad 600. It sorta has a faulty cdrom but it did come the Ubuntu installation screen once. So im guessing it'll work. i dont know why it was working on my desktop. I also got the HD in today.

All Windows CD were bootable. It's just that older computers didn't have the capability to boot from CDROM drive until about when Win2000 was around. You had to boot from floppy so you could run MSCDEX.EXE and OAKCDROM.SYS or whatever CDROM driver you needed to get it working.
