I'm using a slow computer at the moment, so when I start it up I want it to boot up and log in to windows but at the same time I want it to be password protected. Let me rephrase that, I want the computer to load up my stuff in the background while the password prompt exists. Maybe it's something easy to find online, but I keep getting results for how to boot into safe mode and what to do if you forgot your password. Hopefully one of you power windows users know what I'm talking about.

Let's make sure I understand here...

You want your profile on your PC to be loaded/seen but still have the ability to login?

Why?:confused::rolleyes:

Windows is a muli-user OS and doesn't have anything built in to facilitate something like this.

I think your best bet would be to set windows to log in automatically, then find a utility that locks the computer and put it in your startup. That way it will boot up and log in, then immediately lock it when it process the startup scripts.

With that said, you're giving up security for convenience. There is going to be a window where your computer is insecure. I wouldn't recommend doing this, but it should achieve what you're looking for.

Basically I want the pc to "lock computer" upon starting up. I don't want to walk out the room and then find a family member using myspace and having to throw them off the pc. But at the same time since it is a slower computer, I don't want the wait twiddling my thumbs for windows to load when all I want is to just delete the junk mail. Yea, it's sounds weird, but I'm trying to cut minutes wasted during my day and lower my stress level, this is one of them. And while typing your response, I'm going to try a new search, now with the term 'lock computer' in it. Thanks for triggering the word off in my head.:)

Another thing:

Look into Boovis. It's an app that helps decrease the startup time for Windows XP. I've seen some INCREDIBLE results from tweaking with this application. After using it, and a good defrag, you might not need to lock the computer as startup times can be pretty darn quick!

Demon, I'll look into bootvis, it sounds interesting. With the above trick, there is a moment where security might be an issue, it does take a few seconds to kick in so I wouldn't recommend it for a work place. But this is basically what I was looking for. Thanks for your help.

ghetto solution:

tweakui to log in automatically and then start screen saver after one minute with password upon resume

Fire up computer.

Lock door on the way out of the room!

Problem solvered!

This is very simple. Just password-protect all accounts. If you have a computer that takes to long to load, even from the login screen, you need to fix that by removing some of the start-up apps. Also, and I'm being 100% serious, if waiting 30 seconds to a minute causes you stress in your day, you need to be shutting off the computer, speaking to a doctor, and solving the bigger issues in your life.

A simple password will keep family members out. Combined that with running a lean system, configured properly, and you won't have any issues. But if this is actually causing you stress, you need to address those problems immediately.

Buy a 1gig stick of ram and your problems are most likely solved. The advice of just logging off is also good.
