I just wanted to try X64 on my new computer so I downlaoded the free trial from microsoft...

I'm currently on Vista Basic by the way.

I tried mounting it with dtools and it said it gots to boot from the CD.
So i extracted the files from the iso and burned them on a CD.. but when I restart my computer with the CD in, it does not boot..

So I'm stuck here, can anyone help me?

thx.

The error was in extracting the iso's contents and burning to a CD, which means you left out the boot files. You need to burn the ISO as an image.

That being said, I would use this inside of a virtual machine created in Virtual PC 2007. If you don't like it, or your trial runs out, you still have your Vista system intact.

Virtual PC can't run 64-bit guests.

VMWare can though.

I think though the question is, why is the OP extracting files from the ISO? You burn the ISO to a CD as an image and then boot from it. No extracting.

Didn't know that, but it appears you're right.

The x64 download instructions advise to burn the ISO image onto a CD, not extract the files from the image

exactly. that's the entire point of an ISO or other disc image format.

Odds on getting the usual, 'I burned the iso to a disc, but now all I have is a DVD with the .iso file on it" thread appearing next?

maybe...since the ISO fits on a CD !:)
