I am building a new computer soon and I want to OC my cpu to ~3.4-3.6ghz. I am going to buy the Intel E6750 and the Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3R motherboard.

I am planning on buying 4gb of RAM and I was originally going to buy 2 sets of 2x1gb Crucial Ballistix DDR2-800. I decided against that since 4 sticks of ram would be putting more strain on the NB and there's no guarantee I'd get 4 matching sticks.

I've been looking at 2x2gb sets of RAM and they don't seem too expensive. DDR2-800 can be bought for around 200-220 dollars (which is my budget for RAM).

But since I am getting the E6750, which has a multiplier of 8x, that would mean my RAM would have to run at 450mhz to achieve a CPU speed of 3.6ghz, right? 3600/8=450.

Well I thought, since 2x2gb don't really overclock well, why not just go with DDR2-1000 or faster RAM? So I wouldn't have to worry about OCing my ram, just my cpu.

Here is the RAM I really want to buy one it is in stock, it just came out:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231145

But the thing is, the motherboard I chose says it supports DDR2-800 and DDR2-1066 RAM, and the RAM I chose isn't on their supported RAM list. Do you think I could still use it and it would post at DDR2-1000 speeds? Or would I have to select it as DDR2-800 in my BIOS and then OC it to it's normal speed?

I am building also a sys with Gigabyte and the Intel Core 2 Duo E6850.

Why not the Gigabyte GA-P35-DQ6 (BEST TESTED) with the rev 1.0 en de 1.1 variant?

From Gigabyte:
Thank you for supporting GIGABYTE products.
The difference between motherboard revision 1.0 and 1.1 is the cooling system design. Revision 1.1 has a modified layout structure reinforcing the overall construction of cooling design to improve quality. When the product is used under same conditions, the thermal performance and system compatibility between revision 1.0 and 1.1 are the same.

Best Regards,
Question - 520705

I am thinking about some PC 6400 with CAS 3 (but 4x1Gb cause I need the Gb's for my high res scanner).

We are gonna test what this sys can do in OC and than you also hear which ram exactly.

Report back later about that.

For my E6600 sys resently bought the DDR II TeamXtreem 2x1GB HC5-D.

I wantede the TeamXtreem HC4 but the don't sell them anymore this must be the replacement.

Havn't tested it yet report back.

You have to read the RAM test on the internetz to be sure about your choice.

CL4, CL5 PC 6400, PC8500 doesn't say anything until you've read the tests.

You will find at which max MHz these Ram's sustain there 5-5-5-15 for instance so depending on your OC.

I make 1167 MHz on my Asus P5B with the E6600.

Which RAM sustain 5-5-5-15 at 1167 is my question?

I thought these TeamXteeem's are the answer on this question.

Yeah, the G.Skill ram I mentioned JUST came out so it hasn't been tested yet. I've never heard of Team Xtreem. I think the DDR2-800 Crucial Ballistix are able to reach ~1000mhz (2x1gb). But since I want 4gb (2x2gb), the G.Skill's I mentioned seem to be the best possible choice right now, according to the specs. They are supposed to run at 500mhz (1000mhz/2) at 5-5-5-15, so I if got those and I wanted to overclock my CPU to 3.6ghz, I could even lower the speed by 50mhz and still achieve a CPU oc of 3.6ghz, which may actually tighten the timings on the ram.

I just want to know if the motherboard I chose (Gigabye GA-P35-DS3R) would support the DDR2-1000 RAM at it's full speed or if I would have to do anything to make it run at that speed.

Maybe just write to Gigabyte your question they are very supportive.

Very interseting question if you want to go for 2x2GB ...something I also want in the future.

But ouer test with 4x1GB will also be very interesting to see if that is a major factor in a high OC?

We will get the answer very soon I hope when the sys parts arrive...later.

i found a review for the g.skill ram i posted. it seems like pretty good ram, check it out

If 1000 MHz is enough for you? For me it is not enough I need the Ram to sustain this 5-5-5-15 over 1167 MHz.

Here some specs and Indeed G. Skill also has some verey good RAM- The same G.Skill's as in the test you found G.Skill PC2 8000.
But the TeamXtreem and the Crucials Top it at 4-4-4-12 up to 1200 MHz as you can see in the test below:

of course. 1000mhz is plenty for me. i figure if i run both sticks at 500mhz i will theoretically be able to OC my cpu (e6750) to ~4ghz without even touching the ram. but i want to OC my cpu to ~3.6ghz. 1000mhz is perfect for me.
