alright, i have Windows XP PRO x64 edition and Windows Vista Ultimate x64 dual booted on my d630 laptop. I installed Vista Ultimate first, installed drivers, got it working, then installed XP installed drivers. Both would boot after i installed each, and, as usual, XP ate the Vista bootloader, so i couldnt boot into vista.

I repaired the Vista installation, got the bootloader back, and now i can see the boot options for both Vista and XP. Now for the problem.. every time i try to boot into XP it gets past the ntdlr load process, and fails at loading NTDETECT.

Any ideas on what i can do to fix this? or am i going to need to repair the XP install, then repair the vista install again? or can i just create the NTDECECT file and put it in an xp folder from inside vista? (Vista boots fine at the moment.)

Thanks for the help.

Download EasyBCD (http://neosmart.net/dl.php?id=1) and install it in Vista

It'll help you recover your XP install.

As a rule of thumb, you should always install Operating Systems from oldest to newest when you plan to implement a dual boot configuration. Install XP first followed by Vista second.

tried that too, didnt help very much. I ended up nuking the hard drive and starting over (for the third time) installed Vista, Installed XP, repaired the Vista bootloader from the commandline, then edited the boot.ini with bcdedit by hand.
