So my current rig (in my sig) is being replaced by a heftier system some time in the near future. Having nothing to do with the current rig at that point, I've decided to make it into a game server for another forum that I frequent.

We haven't decided on the game yet so I don't know what kind of power it is going to entail, but it shouldn't prove to be TOO heavy of a load. Also, it will be running off of my school's internet connection granted it doesn't eat up my weekly bandwidth allowance too fast. (7Gb/week).

If it does, I will have to leave it home and run it off of our current cable connection.

Basically, I am looking for an operating system to use. I want it to be stable, and not be a huge resource hog. I have Windows XP Home on it now, but I was also looking at Kubuntu, Xubuntu, FC7, and FreeBSD.

But, I am totally open to any other options and that is why I posted here before I went off on my own. What do you all think would be a stable OS to run this type of server?

Well first figure out what games you want to host and see if those games have linux server packages.

Well the options thus far are Jedi Knights 2, JK3, FEAR Combat, Farcry, and TF2 (when it comes out). I haven't looked yet to see if any of these have Linux server packages, but I'll do that tomorrow.

If they don't, aren't there 3rd party apps out there for Linux builds that allow you to run game servers for most games? If not I'm sorry, I'm new at this.

Just run WinXP Pro and install LogMeIn Free on your computer and the game server. That way you can remote into it and tinker with it if needed (adding map packs, patching, etc).

(that is, if you end up leaving the computer at home)
