I have a Gigabyte K8NXP-SLI mobo and I am trying to install Vista on my machine.

I just disconnect the sata cable from my XP boot drive and plug in a [new] blank drive, then boot off the Vista DVD. The installer takes like 15 minutes to load and when it finally does, it doesn't detect any HDD's and obviously can't proceed.
I feel like I am missing something obvious. i've tried several vista discs and i've installed XP several times no sweat.

someone suggested turning off AHCI support in my bios, but I couldn't find anything like it, maybe it goes by another name?

Did you check that the new HD was seen by the bios and was registered as the primary boot device? Or secondary it makes no difference while installing anyway.

OT: Ditch the Vista while you can and get XP. You will _not_ regret it.
