Curious if anyone has seen this before... I got a new Samsung 500G HD501LJ SATA drive the other day, hooked it up and ran Samsungs Hutil on it to test it out, it was giving a command timeout on the Spindown/Spinup part of the test, and an command timeout error on LBA 0 on the surface scan and was really slow doing the surface scan on the first part of the disk and then sped up, when I ran Hitachi's DFT on it, it clicked a bunch when it got to the surface scan and ultimately failed with the generic "problem with non-Hitachi" drive.
So I was curious to see if the errors were simply because the drive was still completely blank from the factory, erased the MBR and zero-filled a bit, and low and behold it now passes all tests without error in both DFT and Hutil, and is blazing fast from beginning to end.
At first I was concerned this drive maybe bunk, but to me I can see that maybe the diagnostics were expecting something in the MBR or beginning of the disk. Does my hypothesis make sense to anyone else?
