I took out the hard drive cage from a Antec SLK3700 and would like to put some SATA drives in it to use as external storage (BTW, dumped the case). Should I leave the drives bare or what can I surround the cage with to protect the drives? I plan on mounting a 120 mm fan on front to keep the drives cool.

You can leave the drive cage bare; the only problem will be that it will probably look strange on your desk. Stick some rubber feet or something on the cage, so it can sit securely and not scratch anything, and it'll be good to go.

Depending on what drives you plan to put in the cage, you might want to put a box around it for noise control if not for "protection".

You don't need to secure the drives, it's pretty much all cosmetic. Just keep objects away from it and you should be fine.

Why not go for a nice little raid box tower?
