I'm building a new computer. The existing powersupply I have, while 4 years old now, is EPS12v as was required by the xeon motherboard I've used. The 24-pin main connector should be fine as the new board i'm getting has a 24-pin connector also, but the board only has a 4-pin 12v connector. The 12v connector on my PSU is 8-pins.

Do motherboards ever come with adapters to accommodate a 8-pin 12v connector when the board itself only has a 4-pin? Would I even need an adapter or could I plug it in so 4 pins just sort of hang over the side?

If there's room for it to hang over the side, it should work fine. The eight pin is just two 4-pin side by side.

If there's no room, you might be able to cut the thing in two.

A 4-pin to 4-pin extension would work fine too, if such a thing exists. Not too hard to make up if the parts are around. Just hook it up with four of the 8 pins hanging off the side of the extension.
