I'm going to be upgrading to Vista 32 ultimate as soon as I get my new build and am wondering which av program works the best. I want one that doesn't take up any resources except on the scheduled scans.

NOD32 IMO. It's very, very fast - especially compared to Symantec (corporate or personal).

If you want to go free, AVG (free.grisoft.com) is pretty fast too and a good choice.

For playing games and stuff, I still recommend turning off realtime scanning for any AV - but if I forget to do so with NOD32, I usually don't even notice a difference.

Is there a way for Vista to not nag me if I have live protection turned off?

I'd suggest NOD32, as well.

You can get rid of the nags. Go into the Security Center and on the left panel you will see something like "change how security center notifies me" - there, you can turn it off. Personally I disable the service all-together.

If a freebie is required then IMO the Avast freebie is less of a resource drain on single cored rigs than the AVG Freebie.

Definitely NOD32 if paying for an AV tool is part of the equation!

If the "nag me" you mention is the Security Centre prompts and alerts then that can be disabled easily. Control Panel -> Security Centre -> "Change the way security centre alerts me". If it's something else you're describing then perhaps you'd best provide a bit more detail.

Nope that's it.

Thanks for your help, I'll be picking up a copy of NOD32 :)
