I tryed the test version of windows vista when it was avalible and the 64bit version would not detect my dvd drive in windows,
now i have installed windows xp 64bit trail version, and its fully updated.
it will not enable my dvd drive

I can see it in device manager, it gives an ! by the name and this error
""
Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)
""

i am unable to find another driver for it.
is there anything else i can try to get it to work in 64bit windows

the dvd drive i have is _NEC DVD_RW ND-3540A
using an Asrock Dual Sata II , motherboard

Do you need to load any chipset drivers for your board, or controller drivers? Some of the newer chipsets have their IDE ports handled by a 3rd party vendor.

as fare as i know, no.
there are no chipset drivers on the asrock site for the board.

Every board has chipset drivers. Usually, you go to the chipset manufacturer's website for the latest.

Error Code 39 (or 18. or 10. or 31, or...) in relation to 'missing' optical drives dates back to Windows XP's release, and end-user efforts trying to install incompatible or conflicting burning and/or virtual drive apps.

See here for the resolution:

and attend to the list of software you have installed. Something amongst that has caused the problem, not Vista.
