I have a internal hard drive from an old desktop, but no desktop anymore. I need to copy it's contents to my laptop. Is there some kind of cable I can buy to hook it up to the usb port on my laptop? and what about powering it. doesnt it need to be plugged into a power source?
thank in advance

Depending on whether you have a IDE or SATA drive, any of those enclosures will work for you. And since this is a 3.5" hard drive, you will need an external power source. But all of the enclosures above have power adapter so you're good to go

If you're looking for a more versatile thing you might be able to use for other things, and "pretty" isn't a concern, you might try this (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812104062) or one of its kin.
