View Full Version : How much HD space is Vista supposed to take up?

My laptop hard drive is 80 gigs and is divided into a C: 25gb partition and a D: 55gb partition. The smaller partition is Windows only. XP took up only about 5gb of my C: When I upgraded to vista enterprise, my C: had only 10gb free/15 used. Disk cleanup dropped Vista down to 10.6gb leaving 14gb free on my windows partition. Is this normal, or do I need to clean up more useless XP files?

Taken from microsofts site:

Windows Vista minimum supported system requirements

Home Basic / Home Premium / Business / Ultimate

* 800 MHz processor and 512 MB of system memory
* 20 GB hard drive with at least 15 GB of available space
* Support for Super VGA graphics
* CD-ROM drive

Sounds like the sucker is just massive :o

Yep, I just installed ultimate, used up 10 gigs to start with...

Home Premium after the installation will be roughly 8-10GB not counting the pagefile (depends on the amount of RAM you have, doncha know)

Business, around 10-12.

Ultimate, 10-14 for whatever reason, same conditions as above.

For some strange "I can't figure this shit out" reason, Vista is never the same with each install, go figure. :p And I've done well into the 2,000 installs range so far...

Minimum of 20GB for a usable installation is what I recommend to people that choose to split their system partition off into a separate one. 25GB is a nice amount for Ultimate, gives you roughly 8-10GB to install your apps, etc. Keeping the data and goodies on a separate partition is always a good idea, but you'll get a lot of varying opinions on that, as expected.

Mine is 10.7gb including the pagefile. That doesn't bother me in the least considering Oblivion is over 4gb with no mods even and Stalker is 5.32gb with a few mods.

Got a friend of mine down in Australia that eats, sleeps, lives, and breathes rFactor. Wins a lot of races in his local league also... I've tried it before but since I haven't spent money on a proper wheel to get the full experience or some pedals, it's just pretty and I watch as a spectator. :)

Blasted Tomb Raider game is over 7Gb. 'sif worry about 10Gb or so for Vista. Bloody-minded, that is!

I just don't understand why some people seem to expect everything to squeeze into a beetle's bum bag. Smallest hard drive on offer at my personal favourite online store is 160Gb.

The only reason I brought it up was because Vista was installed on a pre-existing 25 gb partition, so obviously space is limited.

The 25Gb partition is restrictive, but if your needs aren't too demanding you'll be fine.

Whats probably sucking up a lot of space is System Restore. The bigger your HD, the more space it will use.

Yea, it's a great racing sim. You definitely need a decent wheel and pedals to really get into it though. My old Microsoft force feedback wheel is still going as strong today as it was the day I bought it. Tell your friend he should get GTR2 also if he doesn't already have it. Anyone who likes rFactor will also like GTR2. <sorry for OT>

Vista uses about 15% or so percent of your hard drive space to store system restore and shadow copys, if you need more space, you can 1. delete hibernation files by using disk clean up (about 1 gig or so) 2. if files are not really critical, you can modify how often Vista takes a system restore snap shot and shrink the percentage it uses for storage or just do it manually and delete all but the most recent restore point. Or like me, if you rarely needs restore, you can turn it off completely. Shadow copies is a cool concept and can be real useful when needed but personally i rarely found myself in situations where it is necessary.
