I made a deal with someone on this board, basically i told him i wanted money order but i could take a check but to let me know what he is sending before anything. He said he would get a money order so i thought this would be a very smooth transaction, when i received his letter it had a check in it. I can't cash checks since i don't have a bank account so if anyone sends me a check i usually have them send it in my mothers name so she can cash it for me. He said it was a cashiers check(prepaid check?) that he got from his bank so i would have no problem cashing it which was just the opposite, every cashier tells me the same thing so now i don't know what to do. If i open a bank they said it will take 10 days for me to be able to receive the funds and that honestly feels to long of a wait and i am sure the guy paying doesn't want to wait 10 days for me to ship. I need some advice here, plz help :(

If you are of legal age, get a bank account. If you need the money right now, endorse the cashier's check over to your mother and ask her politely for money.

Cashier's checks are good. They are like money orders in that the purchaser either has to pay cash for them or funds are transferred into a trust account at the bank.

There should be no problem in you getting paid.

He didn't send it from Nigeria did he ..:)

Just sign the back, and have your mom deposit it.
then get the money from her...

Is the dollar amount hand written on the check, or is it printed?

If it is hand written, it is a personal/business check.

If it is printed by a machine, then it is likely a cashiers check.

I know that the cashiers checks from my bank, actually say that ("Cashiers Check") on them, in big bold letters.

Whichever it is just either go with your mom or sign the check over to your mom on the back.

Cashiers checks are just money orders from the post office. The bank that issues it (if you can find local branch) may cash it. Some banks charge fees for non-account cashings but only should be a couple of dollars.

Honestly, if he told you he would get you a money order, and got you a check that is difficult for you to cash, if he had to wait 10 days, I'd consider it his problem.

but in an effort to make things a little easier, as everyone else has said, sign it to your mother and have her deposit it and give you the money for it.

but I suggest getting a bank account anyways. It's just good to have, and you can almost definately get a "free checking" account from somewhere. (I'm sure there is an HSBC, or M&T around you somewhere.. they should both provide free checking)

Sorry, I kinda skipped my point..

The point I was trying to make is, that a Cashiers Check is, for all intents and purposes, a money order. They are guaranteed by the issuing bank to not bounce (unless stopped, but you can do that with a Money Order too). A personal check is not, it can bounce.

What bank is the check (be it personal or cashiers) drawn on? Are there any of them around you? Usually you can cash a check drawn from the same bank, at no charge.

Meinzorn: What is HSBC and M&T? I cannot determine who those are?

EDIT: Apparently those are banks from the DC/PA/MD/NJ/NY areas...

Are you serious? Who doesn't have a bank account. Even if for some crazy reason you didn't, pretty much any gas station / payday loan place will cash it for you. If THAT somehow doesn't work, you can endorse it to anyone and they can cash it, and hopefully they'll give you the money ;)

To op: if it is infact a cashiers check, you should have no problem getting it cashed. Take it to a grocery store's customer service desk. They often process payroll and cashiers checks (for like 3%). The best route would be your parents, but barring that, consider the option I just gave you.

OFF TOPIC - OrangeFire, please PM me! Heatware is needed!

yeah...

<-- dumb.

Didn't think that M&T might not be everywhere. they are all over the place up here.. about 20 of them in the area.

as far as hsbc, it's a bank that is all around the world, so I figured there could be one near him. but it doesn't matter, any bank would do. A bank account just makes life a lot easier. It opens up the world of paypal, paying bills with checks, or paying bills online with your bank account, and unfortunately it opens you up to credit cards too.. but if you're careful with those you're fine.

Like the others have said sign the check over for now and complete the transaction. Do also go setup a free student checking account for yourself and go get yourself a debit check card. Couldn't live without my bank account and you might as well figure it all out now before you move out on your own.

i am going to the bank with my mother tomorrow morning, will update when i get back and yes the amount is printed on the check not written so it must be a cashier check

I signed the check and gave it to my mother, the bank told her it will take till next thursday to withdraw it so i will be mailing out what i owe on thursday. Thanks for the help :)
