Sorry if this has been covered before (it likely has) ... I tried searching but no direct hits.

I just went to install Ubuntu 6.10 server and must have checked the wrong box and formatted a raid that I meant only to specify a mount point for (not format also). It was a raid 5 constructed from four 200gb hard drives. The raid contains a single extension 3 partition, /dev/md0 ==> /raid.

Anyways, the drive has been formatted but I have not touched the contents at all. Is there a good utility I can use that will be able to rebuild the filesystem with the files that should be on the disk already? I found http://sourceforge.net/projects/giis/ but when it comes down to potentially losing all of my data, I would rather ask for some suggestions before trying things on my own.

Luckily none of the data is too important and maybe a fourth of it is already backed up but if I am able to recover this in anything short of a weeks work it would be well worth it. Thanks for any help you can give me.

salvage (http://std.dkuug.dk/keld/readme-salvage.html) may work on some files, but due to the way ext3 works you'll likely be stuck with some very strange filenames, none of which will match their original names. In short, you're probably best off recovering from backups and crying yourself to sleep :( Time to look into a backup solution was last week, but now is almost as good.
