I know the byte rule thing and that when formatted, my amount of space will be lower but this is the equivalent of a 300gb drive since my formatted size ends up being 279 when I bought the drive as a 320gb originally. I am using windows vista. I even used seagate seatools to set the drive to maximum drive capacity.

This suggests the formatted size should be 298GB. Checking mine, that's what I got. I have a PATA with AAE firmware, if that even matters.

after formatting my seagate 320 gig drive, i was left with 298gigs
Can you RMA the drive and see if that makes a difference? I havent read through the entire thread, but have you tried a bios flash?
BTW how well do the seagate tools work?
