I need to start backing up data on my home computer. I've been a little lazy and occupied with other projects. I have a WD external 120 GB drive which I can backup to. I have around 600 GB of storage in my computer. To note, one drive makes up about half of that and is devoted to record ed tv shows from my tv tuner. I don't need to back up that stuff.

I mainly need to back up my documents and some other critical data. My my documents folder is around 70 GB. Most of that won't have to be backed up often, except for maybe the school files. I'm mainly looking for what programs to use.

The drive came with some retrospect software (not sure if that's the exact name). I was using Nero's Backitup software and that almost cost me all my data when I reinstalled my OS. I'm not sure what I should be using.

I have a copy of the corp edition of Ghost. I was considering using that to make an image of my computer when I redid it, but that software was a little complex than I thought it would be. I'll have to do some research to figure that out.

I would probably do the long time of burning DVDs, but tapes might be easier to do.

Dantz Retrospect is quite powerful, and highly recommended. You can make incremental backups easily, which means you can effectively get several copies of that 70GB of data onto your 120GB drive. It'll also create DVDs; I'd strongly suggest that you do this once a year or so. Then store them in your safety-deposit box at the bank, if you have sufficient room.
