Things you can do off the top of my head:

Connect an external harddrive
Network with another PC
Install another internal harddrive
Use some form of removable media.

Unless I'm mistaken I don't think you can repartition a drive without formating it first, although maybe some of those fancy partitioning programs can do it.

You can repartition the drive using partition magic, and it doesn't require a reformat, however it's rather risky. I think buying an external hard drive would be the easiest thing to do.

Why not just buy another hd and load windows on it. Then when you get it up hook up the old drive and copy the stuff over. When you are done you can then format the old drive and use it as a backup.

If you care about all that info, then they should really consider getting another hard drive to copy it onto periodically.

you can always plug that drive into another computer - friends or whatever - and copy it to theirs temporarily, and then copy back when you've reinstalled windows.

Assuming it's just the OS that is f**ked up...then all you need to do is Install windows on top of itself....specify a different folder i.e: Windows2 instead of Windows (the corrupt folder)

Or, just add another drive...install windows on it...then copy the data from the original drive. Shut down, remove the newly added drive....format the old drive and install windows again...then repeat the process to put the data back onto the orignal drive.

If it's the hardware that's messed up, then remove the hard drive and connect it to another pc as a secondary drive and just copy the data once you boot up to that machine's OS.

Connect an external drive or move that information to another computer over the network. Or, if you want to shell out a few dollars, tape backups.

Way to crap on the thread

Make sure the jumpers on the drives are set correctly for there position on the cable.
