I built my new system to be both relatively quiet and high performance.
My previous system had a lot of harddrives, a lot of fans, Enermax server tower, something like 7 chassis 80mm, 2 in power supply, cpu, 2 on videocard, one in front of harddrive bay... it sounds like a jet engine when you turn it on. I had 6 harddrives sitting in front of the front 2 intake fans, which didn't keep them cool, and basically blew warm air into the rest of my system, it was a thermal/noise nightmare.
New computer in sig, is in the mid-tower Lian-Li aluminum chassis, light weight, doesn' break my back, can actually lug it to my parents for the weekend, or to a LAN party (not that I really go to any anymore). Has 2 quiet chassis 120mm fans, one intake, and one exhaust. The Liberty has a single quiet 120mm fan. I put the Tuniq tower on the c2d, 120mm set to the lowest setting is not audible and keeps cpu plenty cool even 100% loaded gaming, I'm not overclocking...yet.
But the Raptor...OMG SO LOUD the click click click click. must make it stop =( And my two external maxtor 160GB drives, in external inclsures on eSATA cables are also noisy. The 500gb maxtor I have inside is very quiet though. argh.
