is there a way to make the background change every so often like the little gadget that comes for the side bar?

How 'bout, you change that gadget out for this one (http://gallery.live.com/liveItemDetail.aspx?li=3dc3c177-e6ec-49d0-8737-9c4fdc59b82a&l=1), keeping the sidebar gadget that changes and with that one (http://gallery.live.com/liveItemDetail.aspx?li=3dc3c177-e6ec-49d0-8737-9c4fdc59b82a&l=1) comes the ability to randomly change the wallpaper on timed intervals. Just set you up a folder specifically for this, rename it and make sure this gadget sets that folder as it's target. Wham! Instant changing wallpaper and a sidebar gadget that changes pictures, all with one stone.
