if its just for running an app for school, why not use VMWare server, its free and fairly easy to use

man i really do appreciate the suggestion. the answer to why not, is my ignorance. i am spread very thin between work and school so i have not devoted much time to informing myself of my options. also i have already ripped open my software package.

running VMWare with networking in "Bridged" mode (an option you select when setting up a virtual server) is super easy. Once the virtual machine is setup, you put your OS cd in the cd drive and "turn the server on"...it will be in a small window, but it will be just like installing the OS natively.

Everything is pretty much intuitive.
