View Full Version : Mac OS 8/9/10 security
I am trying to do research in how to secure the different mac OS's for a project that I am doing.
I need things like documents that list step by step, or what is required to lock things down.
So things like securing login's, single sign on, and what ever else you can think of.
if you can provide links to the docs I would be in your debt.:p
Thanks for the help

Mac OS X:
Don't make your main account an admin, make it limited.
Have a good password.
turn on SW firewall just for kicks (system prefs>sharing>firewall tab
Stay up to date.
Done.
Couldn't tell you about 8 or 9

Securing OS9: Update to OS X if the hardware can handle it, if not buy a new Mac
Securing OS8: See Securing OS9. Or unplug network cable.
Seriously while viruses were not all that common for Mac OS (still are not common, at least in the wild) the earlier versions were not exactly what I would consider secure.
Interesting way to take a Mac offline (Do not try this at work or on a computer you do not own, and I hope I didn't break any rules with this, if so I'll delete it):
For Mac OS X (tested in 10.2 have not tried again since but may still work). Requires an admin level account (pretty common on Macs from what I've seen of Mac users, might not even have a password). Turn on SMB file sharing. Create a little shell script that mounts the file share to /users/%username%/desktop. Set shell script as a start up item.
When I last tested this it would create a "spinning beachball of death" that freezes Finder until the system is powered off with the power button. With this script set as a startup item it would go into this during user logon. Easily fixed in single user mode. Can be prevented by runing as a limited user and not allowing terminal to be launched (passwords come in handy too).
I should note that I dont actually own a mac, this is for a project that I have to secure the mac os in a secure invironment. this is for a court house that has mac, windows, and Unix systems. Dont ask why I dont know my self why there are so many different types of OS's
I am trying to secure the mac's so that they are able to hold sensitive information and not be open to just anyone.
Also it is a school project, and we have decided to limit the os to just OS X to make our life just a bit easier.:p
thanks again for the help
Does any one know of any good utills that help to secure the mac X os? free or not
