View Full Version : My VM Purchase Experience

A few months ago I started to consider buying a new machine to replace the 2003 vintage HP Pavilion 775 I've been using. Normally, I've gone near (but not at) the lower end of the technology curve to get the most bang for my buck. This time I wanted to go a bit higher and get not only better technology, but a higher quality build as well. I actually looked at HP and Dell but neither offered exactly what I wanted at a price I was willing to pay. Besides, I've bought from both of those vendors before with varying degrees of dissatisfaction. I don't game much, but I am a heavy multitasker that needs a reliable machine that will stay up, running and responsive.

I started my search by simply typing "custom built computers" into Google and found a bunch of companies (including VM) that could potentially do the job. A little more research and I stumbled upon the [H]Consumer review (http://consumer.hardocp.com/article.html?art=MTIxNSwxLCxoY29uc3VtZXI=) of the Velocity Micro Gamers' Edge PCX system and [H]ardForum discussions. Very encouraging so I went to the VM website and priced the system I wanted. It was more than I'd paid for a system in years, but then it was also more computer than I'd purchased in years. At that point I just sat on it for a while mostly because I wanted Vista on my machine but didn't want to be the earliest adapter. But I also wasn't going to make an impulse decision.

I finally ordered a ProMagix™ PCX High Performance Home & Office PC from VM on March 2nd:

Genuine Intel® P965 Chipset Motherboard with DDR2, PCI Express
Intel® Core™ 2 Duo processor E6600, dual 2.4GHz cores, 4MB L2 Cache
Arctic Cooling® Freezer 7 Pro Heatsink
LX Black - Velocity Micro Signature Case
500 Watt Power Supply
2048MB Corsair™ DDR2 PC5300 DDR667
512MB eVGA™ NVIDIA® GeForce™ 7600 GS, Dual Heads
250GB Western Digital WD2500JD 7200rpm SATA/150, 8MB Cache
20x Lite On® DVD+/-RW/CD-RW Dual Layer
16x DVD/48x CD-RW Lite On® Combo Drive

My overall experience with VM was pretty much identical to those in the [H]Consumer review. The ordering process was painless, they kept me informed of my system's progress via email and they shipped it to me the exact day that they said they would.

UPS delivered the box yesterday and I dove in. The only two things wrong were that the case was missing a foot (see the picture below) and they didn't give me my free T-shirt. The machine booted up beautifully, the initial setup process was painless and the machine ROCKS. The only "real" issue I had was that both CPU-Z and PC Wizard report that my 2.4GHz E6600 is running at about 1.6GHz. However, Vista, itself reports that it is running at 2.39GHz. I called VM tech support about this and one of the techs there said that he had seen this happen before on Vista machines. I've sent an email to the PC Wizard and CPU-X support people to see if they can enlighten me as to why I'm getting this strange result.

Here's a picture of the innards of my machine. (Note the missing foot at the bottom left.) Very clean and tidy. I'm sure that's part of the reason the cores are running at about 39C no matter how much load I've put on them so far. Very acceptable.

So far, I'm a pretty happy customer. I'll be even happier if they send me my T-shirt.:D

Thought at first you were going to bash VM, boy what a relief, and reading on it looks as if you are very satisfied. I to am looking at VM for my next purchase, and have been toying with both the Gamers Edge, and the one you got.

If VM comes out with both the 32 and 64 bit Vista Ultimate I would buy right now, but as it stands they do not, but they did explain it will happen, just don't know when. If they do not hurry up and Dell has one of those 33% off deals, that they had last August, I will go with them instead, and get a good $1,000 off an XPS 710 system, but hoping that VM comes through, since I'm tired of Dell right now, not as much upgradable

Please keep us informed about the cpu reading issue, and anything else about your system. Very best of luck with it.

Have to ask Heather about the power supply. Two listed that one can select are rated " Certified " and the 500 watter is not. What does "Certified" mean really ?

Just got a message from VM and its a no go at this time for Vista 64 bit offerings. Darn it

I got the following message back from PC Wizard Support:
It's totally normal (look at C1E and Enhanced SpeedStep on the web)

Actually, when I looked deeper at the Intel site, the E6600 has EIST (Enhanced Intel SpeedStep Technology) which was originally targeted at mobile platforms. However, they are putting it in desktop chips as well now. Here's a quote from http://www.intel.com/cd/channel/reseller/asmo-na/eng/203838.htm

Enhanced Intel SpeedStep technology allows the system to dynamically adjust processor voltage and core frequency, which can result in decreased average power consumption and decreased average heat production. By decreasing power and heat on Desktop PCs, system builders can (depending on system configurations) potentially lower acoustics, and even develop more innovative small form factor designs.

So apparently, the observed fluctuation between 1.6 GHz and 2.4 GHz is perfectly normal and provides useful power and heat savings.

But is speedstep on? I turned it and C1E off, and my CPU goes to 1600 on Vista. Thus, I believe it's just a glitch.

I remember doing a review a while back: http://www.hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1164857

All in all, looks good, enjoy your computer!

Nice.

What you pay for it?

The foot came off? Was it in the box? I honestly cannot imagine how it could happen, especially if it was shipped like that. I really apologize for the missing foot.

Just contact support and we'll immediately take care of these issues. Thanks for the feedback.

I've already contacted customer support and they are aware of it. I searched the box twice and the missing foot was not there - honest. It seemed like a weird thing to me as well.

(I'm actually sitting here chuckling as I write this. Would Michael Dell have personally responded and apologized to a customer about a silly missing case foot? I don't think so. :D )

ouch.

Exactly. Not sure if anyone else noticed that. $1700.00 for a simple mATX/e6600/1 HDD/7600GS/budget PSU? What gives? I mean I know the case and overall service is excellent but that price is enormously lopsided. Must be missing something like a 22" LCD?

Sure enough - I just configured the same unit in VM's site and it came out to $1660.00 W/O shipping

I config the same parts online and it's at least $700.00-$800.00 cheaper even with a 7900GS (obviously alot cheaper for a DIY'er in this case)

But VM has super CS I'll give them that :)

Actually it comes out to $1685 - you forgot to upgrade the video card to 512MB. I actually paid $1635 + $59 shipping (they were having a $50 off "sale")

For a machine like this it is always cheaper to do it yourself, but you are overestimating the savings. I priced out the exact components of my machine (except for the power supply and keyboard where I took the closest match) on Newegg including shipping and the OS and it came to $1247 which is about $450 cheaper. This does not include stuff I would have had to buy like thermal compound. Nor does it include what it would cost me in time and frustration.

Given my inexperience at putting machines together (I've mucked around with my hardware before, adding memory, hard drives, CD-ROMS, floppy drives, swapping PSUs, but never built one from scratch alone) and the newness of the OS, it was worth the $400+ extra to have an expert builder/integrator put the thing together and test it. Frankly, I'm glad companies like VM are around and they wouldn't be if they couldn't make a profit. I don't know what their margins are on these things, but if you include labor, support and overhead I can't imagine they make very much per machine.

By the way, when I went over to Dell and HP a couple of months ago to price out similar "high performance" systems and they priced out about the same. I probably got a higher quality build with VM and I got exactly the components I wanted whereas with Dell and HP the configuration options were more limited.

You got a nice system. Enjoy :)
