Hi guys my specs are :

ASUS A8N-32 SLI mobo
AMD X2 4800+ (s939)
2gb mushkin pc3200
2x7900GT SLI etc

My question is, would there be a noticable difference taking the 4800 from 2.4ghz to 2.6ghz? I know this cpu isnt the best OCer so I don't expect to get much more than that on air, but I hear its fairly easy to get that 200mhz

Would there be any noticable difference in gaming? I don't care about the 3dmark scores.

If so, is there an incredibly easy way to get that 200mhz? Or do I have to do a lot of tweaking in the BIOS to get it and keep it stable? (I.E. would it be as easy as just upping the FSB?) I don't normally OC CPUs so it's slightly confusing to me.

Thanks :P

If you play at anything like 1600x1200, then no, the extra 200mhz is going to matter VERY little. Heck, when I had my X2 @2.6ghz, I could barely tell the difference between that and running at 2ghz when I was playing at 1920x1200.

go for it, won't see much gain, but a nudge can help.

Set memory for 200 mem limit, and then set FSB to 220mhz. should give you 1:1 FSB:DRAM.

Double check with AI booster to make it stays at 2.6 otherwise you need to lock the multiplier. Shouldn't need any extra voltage, but make sure your cooling is good before the o/c!

Whats a good temp range? So I know if its overheating or not, though I dont think it would. It's being cooled by an Arctic Freezer 64 Pro, and theres good airflow in the case. It's spacious and well wired / ventilated and regularly dusted out.

Have any of you heard of the 4800 getting any decent OC's other than matching the FX-60? (on air)

Well, if you have pc probe II installed, look at your temps, you don't want your temps getting up to 60c or over (i think the threshold is 65c on x2's). Mine @ 2.64 with a gigabyte G Power lite idles at 27-30c and loads around 42-44c. The X2 4400/4800+ is inheritly a touch hotter than mine though due to the L2.

Its common to see the x2 with 2x 1mb L2 get about 200-300mhz o/c, don't see many get 400mhz+ oc unless on watercooling and/or really good ram.

Since we both got mushkin i assume yours can probably handle 220mhz fine so would again have to assume that 2.6ghz should be a peice of cake.

Edit: and to be all honest, it won't make a large difference, i seen my 3dmark06 score going from 2.2ghz to 2.42 netted some results but going to 2.64ghz didn't do anything for 3dmark06 score, but any game or application that uses the cpu heavily can benefit.

You have to remeber that not only will you be upping the Mhz on the processor.. but since the processor has a built in memory controller.. it will increase the throughput of the RAM as well... even if you make the RAM still run at a stock-ish speed.

PC Probe II is saying my CPU is at 46-47C idle and my mobo is 46C idle. (And it gives me a red alarm about that MB temp) This is at stock, havent OC'd anything yet. Sounds a lot hotter than your setup. Whats the deal?

Also I wanted to reiterate im not interested in 3dmark06 scores, but if that 2-300mhz can help in gaming I'd want to nab it.

Sounds like you have a major issue with air circulation in your computer case.

First.. try taking the side off of your case and see what the temps go to then....

If that helps... you probably need to add a few exhaust fans to the case... one on top will help more than 2 on the back or side.

it's a velocity micro pc. It's well wired and ventilated. It's got a big intake fan in the front and one big exhaust fan in the back right behind the cpu cooler. its also a lian li all aluminum case and its gigantic, highly doubt its a circulation issue.
