View Full Version : X-Fi SPDIF to TV with SPDIF jack and "PC Audio In" jack, how do I do this?

The TV I bought recently (Hannspree XV 32" LCD HDTV) says it has an SPDIF port, and a "PC Audio In" port... I can't tell whether the SPDIF is an input or an output, and whether I can connect my SPDIF output from the X-Fi to the "PC Audio In" port if not. I think I'm misunderstanding something here since I can't find people on google with the same questions :)... it'll take someone who knows a half a second to clear it up for me I'm sure though :D... thanks in advance for answers! I just want 2-channel stereo sound from my X-Fi's output somehow to the TV, while still having my headphones plugged into the X-Fi XtremeGamer.
I ordered this: http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=102&cp_id=10236&cs_id=1023602&p_id=2683&seq=1&format=2&style=
Is it what I need, or did I need (didn't order it) this:

It is more than likely an output. No sense in a TV having a digital input.

How do I connect the X-Fi to the TV, then :(? Wouldn't I have to run the same output my headphones go into, to the TV in that case, to an RCA splitter into the RCA inputs on the TV, meaning I couldn't have both hooked up at the same time? Would I be able to map one of the X-Fi's outputs somehow to be for SageTV *only* to pipe audio out to the TV's "PC Audio In", and then have my headphones hooked up still and playing the computer's sounds only? Is it possible, if none of those can be done, to use the onboard sound in the same fashion simultaneously with the X-FI (leave the X-Fi handling the PC duties, and dedicate the onboard sound to SageTV alone as the audio renderer)?
(Sorry, I'm very confused :) )

Ufortunatley if my info is correct. The extreme Gamer has NO SPDIF input. It has a optical output buried in the Flexi jack. You may notice this if the PC is on and you check the card. You should see alittle red light in the jack. This card with gaming soley as the market has no need for a SPDIF input. Could be wrong but I am pretty sure I am correct. If your TV card has a Line out, then your in business. Connect this to the Line n on the X-fi and you should be good. Does this TV card not send audio straight to the Wave or Direct sound?

OK, let me clarify:
I want a stereo output (I don't care what format so long as it works) that will go to the TV in any way and give me stereo sound through its speakers. I use Sennheiser HD485 headphones on the normal "Line-out" on my X-Fi at the moment, so I was trying to figure out if there's a way to also have the sound go out to the TV without having to unplug the headphones. The TV tuners already record the sound into MPEG2 files, so I don't need to input anything into the sound card :). Ideally, I'd love to keep sounds from the computer (such as a game of WoW, SupCom, or CS:S) seperate from those of the TV (so the TV doesn't just clone the computer sounds, but plays just the sounds from SageTV).
Thanks again!

Pardon me. If your card has only a SPDIF out, then you can't really use that. Possibly get a splitter jack for the line out. This is not optimal though as you will get sounds from the PC aswell. I got it! What about enabling your onboard soundchip, connect this to the TV and set the card to use that fro audio out. This way your games will go to the X-fi and your TV sound will go to whatever onboard you have. The two *should* work together. Hope I am understanding what your trying to do..

Perfect... that's what I was thinking might work, but I wasn't sure, so I wanted to see if anyone else came up with the same answer :). The X-Fi as far as I know has an SPDIF, front-left/right, then surround outputs. I do have onboard sound I could run a cable from, though. I could then tell the SageTV application to use its audio renderer to pipe through the onboard sound.
Thanks :)... wanted to make 100% sure before I ordered more stuff and possibly ended up with the wrong items ;).

Well just check with your headphones. Usually TV apps such as Sage TV will allow you to configure such things. I think it'll work fine. You should be able to test all of it before you order parts. Glad I could help let us know how it works out for you.

I have an x-fi extreme gamer and i cant figure out for the life of me how to connect it to my reciever using digital out. The flexijack that we are supposed to use(the white 3.5mm plug with a red light coming out of it) works for mic in, but wont work for digital out using a digital coax cable and as far as i know i cant find a product that connects an optical toslink cable with the 3.5mm jack. Any suggestions?

You need a mini-to-toslink cable or adapter like this:

The adapters are actually quite unexpensive, must be around $3.
