Firefox is ABSOLUTELY the default browser here, yet every time I click a link in IRC, it opens Internet Explorer. This is driving me crazy. Apparently IE is integrated to the point that its not even in the add/remove programs list either.
Anyone have a solution? I despise IE.

No solution to offer, but I'm curious about whether or not links from other programs ipen in Firefox?
I never had such problems when running Firefox on Vista RC versions. (I don't have it installed any more.) Perhaps you need a different IRC client?
Edit: You're being punished for the hatred. You know that, don't you?

Probably your IRC client is directing the links to IE for a reason. I know mIRC sometimes will ignore whatever the system default browser is and send links that IE picks up, and I use Avant - sometimes they'll load in IE anyway.
Worth checking out the options of your IRC client just in case it requires you to manually pick and choose the browser (default location, application name, executable name, etc)..

clicking mail in windows live messenger opens up ie. looking at screenshots in the Steam store opens up ie. they might just be coded that way though. but it is kinda annoying to have shit open up a different browser

ok. I found a solution:
Startbutton
start search phrase "internet"
internet options
programs tab
set programs
set program access and computer defaults
use the "custom" dropdown
Amazing how you can change it everywhere else, and you don't get what you want. Change it there, and suddenly you're golden.

Try starting firefox with elevated privlages, then set it to default browser.

You say this like it is new or that you are suprised by it. You haven't been able to "uninstall IE" since win9x. That was a huge portion of the anti-trust proceedings in the States and the EU.

He's probably referring to the fact that IE7 did have an option to remove in XP. But your comments are also correct, since IE7 is built in to Vista....the same way IE6 as built into XP and couldn't easily be removed.
