I'm using a compact linksys router. Sitting right beside the router of course I'm getting full signal, but it's limited to 24mbps, I can only get 54 on initial connection and then it ramps down to 24 stable.

Why is this? I have a broadcom 802.11G in my laptop. Checked router settings, everything is on Auto. Wireless G only setting enabled. Tried forcing 54mbps in router but card still ramps down.

My laptop wifi drivers are set on auto as well. But there's so many other crap there that I could be missing out on an option or two.

ah nvm.

I noticed that there was another router on chan 11, so I switched to 1 in case of interference. Apparently thats why it wasn't connecting at 54mb

You my be getting strong signal, but there may also be nearby noise too... Could be from a microwave oven, a 2.4Ghz cordless phone, a neighbor with a wireless router on the same channel, or something else.

First thing to do is try to determin the source of interference... If possible, eliminate it (move the cordless phone, or router for instance)...

If you can't eliminae the interference, try changing to another channel... The common channels are 1, 6 and 11 due to the way the channels overlap... If you're on channel 1, try chaning to 6 or 11... If on 11, change to 6 or 1... etc

(for more on overlapping channels, as usual, Wikipedia already has good info... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wi-Fi#Channels )
