I have a WD 500GB SATA Hard Drive that I store all My Backups on and i have made 2 partitions of 250GB each. It works fine in Win XP and i can see both the partitions i.e D and E.

I built another system and Installed Vista On It and attached my Backup drive as a slave but i cant see the Partitions. The Hard drive is present when i chk it thru BIOS and also in the Device Manager but I dont see the partitions.

I ran DiskMgmt and was able to see the HDD BUT it was in OFFLINE status. I tried to turn it ONLINE but was unable to set it because i kept getting an Error.

Does anyone have any idea to SOLVE this? I just want to be able to use my 500GB backup drive from my old WINXP system and use it on my Vista

The HDD is perfectly fine when i stick it in my WinXPsystemThanks

This may sound like a dumb question, but do you have good vista-compatible drivers for your SATA controller?

How would i know that? I didnt install any drivers VISTA installed them automatically.
It properly detects the master 250gb sata drive so im assuming the SATA drivers are OK?
The 500gb is missing partitions.

What do i need to do to FIX it.

Oh that sucks i dint know that Only Business and Ultimate VISTA seem to support dynamic disks, as i have home PREMIUM.

I dont want to loose all my data OR have to backup like 300GB on DVD's that would take FOREVER! It works on winXp but not on my Vista system.

Well now that we have Identified the problem, does anyone have a solution how to
make the DISK work on VISTA Home premium?

Much like anything reported as a 'fix', one not issued by Microsoft, the author was covering his bases. It's perfectly safe, in MY experience, I fixed two separate drives via this solution.

Safer method? Yeah, put it back in a XP machine and copy, copy, copy...

OK i attempted the above method BUT i got some popups asking for confirmation and i didnt see those screens in that guide.
Attached are images if someone can help me what im supposed to select.

After i made the changes and was about to write them to disk
I got this DIALOG stating its READ ONLY.

So when i selected YES i got another message.

Just was wondering what im supposed to do at the last screen?
